SERIES: ARTISTS IN PROCESS / ANNI HAGBERG

I’ve been working on a series of artists doing what they do in their space. A recent subject captured was the talented Anni Hagberg. Anni has a particular interest in investigating unpredictable process-driven material encounters through sculpture and installation, primarily working with non-traditional mediums within ceramic processes.

PERSONAL PROJECT / THE TRUCK GRAVEYARD

I’ve been going to my family-in-law's station in central Queensland for 12 years now. And due to the sheer size of the place (circa 80,000 acres) I continually discover new treasures. Last Christmas it was an old truck graveyard I spotted in the distance while doing a run to the hay shed. That evening I set off with my camera, and a snake bandage ("A definite haven for snakes" my wife Lucy said) and took a bunch of photos.

Then later, after chatting to my father-in-law Allan, I convinced him to come down another night for some more photos and stories. When we got down there I saw something in his face, a little spark, like he had run into some old friends as the memories seemed to consume him.

It was great chatting to him about vehicles. Each one had its’ own story, or two, and I could see how he enjoyed reliving them.

Allan said he would keep the trucks here with the intention of possibly fixing them up some day, though as time and the elements took its toll on both the trucks and Allan, I think the chances of them taking to the road again are slim. I assured him, though, that they have not gone to waste, they work perfectly well together as an outdoor art museum. I think he appreciated that.
